Mindfulness and Children

After a short break, spent with my loved ones, including but not limited to my mom, my son and my amazing husband, I am back. I missed interacting with you and have lots to share, discuss and review.

As you can tell from the title of my blog post, today’s subject is our precious, smart, extremely observant children. They come to this life with huge potential and with a spongy brain, that takes everything in on the conscious and especially more so on the subconscious level until they turn seven years old. The goodness or malice that their environment provides them with during these first few years stays with them all their lives.

That is why it is essential to give our children a happy, calm and joyful childhood. Not only to help them to have a happier adulthood but to form a happier society.

Now that this fact is out in the open, we can start discussing how. Other than being patient, giving them unconditional love, care and laughter, which are the usual, and expected products of the parenthood; we can help them giving a headstart by teaching them to meditate and to practice mindfulness at a very early age. As early as the third or fourth year of their life.

For children, mindfulness can reduce the effects of bullying, enhance focus in children with ADHD, help with attention problems, improve mental health, wellbeing and social skills. Introducing mindfulness to preschoolers with tools like pictures, objects, food, simple movements, and music, can help them develop an ability to focus attention at a great level.

The activity called ‘’Belly Buddies’’ is a good one to build mindfulness. In this activity, kids listen to music while being asked to notice the sensation of small tone on their stomachs rising and falling as they breathe. A simple activity like this helps kids become more attune with their bodies, while focusing on their breath and music, and could have long-lasting developmental benefits when practiced regularly.

Another activity to practice with kids is called “Spidey Senses,” which highlights the super-focused senses of smell, sight, hearing, taste, and touch that Spiderman uses to keep tabs on the world around him. This will encourage them to pause and focus their attention on the present, opening their awareness to the information their senses bring in. This is a classic mindfulness exercise and encourages observation and curiosity.

Raising our kids mindful of their environment, the people they are surrounded by, the flora and fauna around them makes a huge difference on what kind of human beings they will become. Therefore; I will come back to this topic again and again until I cover more thoroughly the importance of teaching our kids meditation, mindfulness, and spirituality if we want them to live in a better world.

We all love our children, and we try to do our best for them to become mentally and physically healthy, happy, generous and prosperous adults. Why not help them by pointing out the sensibility they have in their nature?
