Is it your gut which dictates your overall health?
Did you know that gastrointestinal functions are linked to autoimmune disorders, learning disorders, neurological and psychiatric disorders? The food we eat directly affects our physical and mental health. In other words, it affects who we are and how we feel! So, when you hear the statement of; “You are what you eat”, you might as well believe it.
Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, who was first and foremost a determined mother, decided to heal her own son who had autism, went back to school to educate herself further and find a solution to this disease, which ended up healing many other degenerative diseases, through adopting her Gut And Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) Diet.
Dr. Campbell-McBride says in one of her interviews on YouTube that; “Food is an extremely powerful way of dealing with diseases”. She mentions that almost 100% of people with chronic neurological conditions also have serious digestive problems, and that actually these digestive disorders are the real culprits for chronic neurological diseases (CND). Therefore; it is extremely important to keep our gut in a healthy state in order to not have a CND in the first place and if we already have such a condition, then remedy that problem by the foods we choose to consume.
So what are these CNDs? There is a long list but the most common ones are; Autoimmune Diseases such as; MS, Fibromyalgia, Celiac Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn’s Disease, Psoriasis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, and other diseases like Asperger’s, Autism, ADD/ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Food Allergies, and many more.
According to Dr. Campbell-McBride, these diseases are the product of the immune system’s attacks on the body’s nervous system. But why does this happen? Because 85% of all immune system is located in the digestive tract, in the gut wall of the person, which means the digestive system is the most important and biggest immune organ in the human body.
OK, we understand the importance of keeping our gut flora healthy in order to keep a strong immune system, what should we be consuming to do that? We need to remove all processed foods, which according to
Dr. Campbell-McBride should not be even called “food”, from our diet. Processed foods do not nurture our body, they just pollute it, she says. So, they need to be removed from our diet. Also, all grains such as; wheat, rice, quinoa, etc., all starches such as; potato, sweet potato, and all other starchy vegetables, need to be removed too.
But what can we eat and feel like we are supporting our immune system by eating them? Meat from grass-fed animals, wild fish, free-range eggs, unpasteurized milk, homemade fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, pickles, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Instead of wheat flour for baking bread, biscuits, muffins, flour made of seeds could be used.
By following these suggestions, we make our immune system stronger, detox our body from the harms of processed foods, therefore; our nervous system goes back to working properly, which literally heals the autoimmune problems we have.
This is huge and by writing this post, I am barely scratching the surface of this whole phenomenon. I strongly suggest you watch the YouTube interview with Dr. Campbell-McBride I have mentioned earlier. Or better yet, get her book “Gut and Psychology Syndrome: Natural Treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, A.D.D., Dyslexia, A.D.H.D., Depression, Schizophrenia” and take a look at it. Some people even think that she deserves to get a Nobel Prize for what she has accomplished with this extensive theory. Worth looking into…
