Might the secret to happiness be, serving others?

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Gandhi

Doing something good for someone, making them happy, gives you more happiness than you’d feel if you did something for yourself. It’s not my statement. I’m just sharing a research result that was revealed by Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton.

They conducted the same research both in Canada and in Uganda. Two completely different cultures, with different lifestyles. And they still got the same results.

Their research proved that the very same magnitude of happiness effect seems to exist across the cultures. It doesn’t matter if you’re buying somebody a coffee or you’re getting food or medication for their family, that you give up to have for yourself.

You are going to ask me; Why am I telling you this?

It’s because I want to explain why I love what I do as a life coach. Because I want to share the feelings I experience when I help someone to reach an A-Ha moment, or when I see the shift in their attitude, the smile in their face.

You’ll say, “But you get something for doing that, you get compensated.” Yes, sometimes, but not always. I have a 7-3 rule. For every seven clients who are willing to work with me, I take three pro-bono clients. I believe that there are so many underprivileged smart, young, ambitious people who deserve to shine. And I feel the happiest when I have the opportunity to help a few of those beautiful beings.

Life taught me to give as much as I can. Treat everyone equally. The more I give, the more I get. The better I serve someone, the happier I become. And, this is a win-win situation at its absolute best.

And this is my Ikigai. It’s my life purpose.

What is yours? How do you give back? What makes you the happiest? I’m inviting you to ask yourself these questions. And then listen to the answers coming from your heart.

I Fully Agree with you Ipek!
Contribution is one of the human needs that also gives us more in return than actually getting something..
    A nice little paradox there..

  2. Still one of the best pieces of advice! Thanks for sharing.
